These algorithms use various criteria such as freshness and authority to determine the value of content and whether an item needs to be removed or updated in the index.

Ranking is the process by which the content in the index is sorted and ranked according to the search engine’s criteria. When a person performs a search, the search engine quickly accesses its index and sorts the entries to return the most relevant results. This sorting or ranking process is often determined by a number of factors, such as relevance, quality, keyword density, and backlinks.

For example, a search for “best cars 2020” might return results which include webpages, blog posts and videos within the first ten results. The websites which appear first in this list are typically the ones which have the most relevant content, the most authoritative backlinks, and the highest quality scores.

The ranking process is an ongoing one as search engines constantly re-rank items in their indexes. This is why it’s important to constantly update and add content related to the query and focus on building backlinks with high authority websites.
